Lessons Learned
Kindergarten-12th Grade

So I got this idea from Kerry, who is awesome. I decided since I leave for a new part of my life tomorrow, I am going to talk about what I consider important.

Kindergarten:
1. Not all adults are nice, but the ones that are will defend you.
2. Talking about penises with the boys at recess will make the teacher forbid you from playing “House.”
3. Stars are scattered, and don’t form in horizontal lines.

1st Grade:
1. Teachers are friends, and they want to help you.
2. Don’t use your neighbor’s glue without asking first.
3. Cool things can come from listening to people who know more than you.

2nd Grade:
1. When you’re forgotten, speak up.
2. There is always someone looking after you.
3. Oreos are not a healthy snack.
4. Dinosaurs were huge.
5. Everyone else doubts us, but I WILL marry Peter.

3rd Grade:
1. Your creativity will get you the most attention.
2. You’ll be the first “Student of the Week” if you extend a hand of friendship to the new kid.
3. Teachers care more about just teaching you the curriculum. You will realize when she bakes brownies for you then takes you out to lunch.
4. Don’t lie about your feelings.
5. Sometimes it is better to stay silent than to ask someone if they’ll be your friend.

4th Grade:
1. Peter is kind of weird, and he has a bad attitude.
2. Beautiful people will always have the last say.
3. If someone stereotypes you, be sure to prove them wrong.
4. The regular English class isn’t any more interesting than the Special Ed one.
5. Math is too hard.
6. No one is safe from violence.

5th Grade:
1. Even if you are disorganized and stupid, a teacher is there to help.
2. People are inherently hurtful.
3. When people hurt you, find new friends.
4. Don’t let mean-spirited people get you down.
5. Don’t tell the popular girls who you like.

6th Grade:
1. Some people are worth working out differences for.
2. Being a bully is easier than being bullied.
3. Even if you aren’t pretty, if you act pretty, you will feel pretty.
4. Your real friends will always listen to the stories you wrote at the lunch table.
5. Your stabs at creativity will earn your teacher’s and classmate’s respect.

7th Grade:
1. When your friends aren’t in your classes, you will make friends with your teachers.
2. You really deserve to be in an honors English class.
3. I would turn George W. Bush into a spider and smash him if I could. Don’t drill in ANWR, bastard!
4. Your teachers will find your political affiliation amusing.
5. The boy that hugs you is the boy you’ll love forever.
6. Body sprays don’t smell all that good when sprayed in excess.
7. Evil is real.
8. Your real friends will throw things at the people who throw things at you.

8th Grade:
1. You won’t do well in science if you sit in the back with all your friends.
2. You will fail math tests if you copy the answers to the homework from the board.
3. Death and tragedy can strike closer to home than you thought.
4. Some of your friends have suffered, and they don’t let on.
5. You can regret one moment more than you regret any number of years.

9th Grade:
1. You shouldn’t always forgive someone who hurts you.
2. Some friends are completely unlikely, but they will save you.
3. The people who love you will always listen to your side of the story.
4. Pick a new and interesting perspective.
5. Teachers can read minds.
6. You can fall in love; you’re just not ready to.
7. Trying something completely new and ridiculous can be the most rewarding experience of your life (www.nanowrimo.org).
8. Choir directors will pretend to offer opportunities, but will probably not cast you in Cinderella on purpose.

10th Grade:
1. Teachers say “Fuck!” too.
2. Your best friends can be teachers as well.
3. You don’t have to be in his class for him to care about you.
4. When you feel like your life is falling apart, the people who understand will find you and save you.
5. Being screwed over can be really inspiring.
6. Don’t date just anyone.

11th Grade:
1. Whatever it is, get over it.

12th Grade:
1. Don’t over analyze things.
2. Life is incredibly beautiful. If you live it.
3. There is always a book or a song that you can relate to.
4. Exposing yourself and working hard will be way more rewarding than being a spectator.
5. Don’t shy away from things because they may hurt you. Whatever it is will make you stronger than you could ever imagine.
6. Do things that scare the shit out of you.
7. Give imperfection a chance.
8. You can hate every moment of something, and still look back on it and miss it.
9. Teaching will always be the greatest love there is.
10. Loss will be staggering and painful. But your friends will pull you through it effortlessly.
11. You can make a difference AND be happy and take care of yourself.
12. Participate in Theater Company as much as possible. Seriously.
13. Don’t forget about the teachers you had earlier, they still want to see you.
14. A somewhat silly crush can turn into the person you have the most in-common with.
15. Live life, and love today.

You will see, teachers have been the most influential people in my life to date. They have saved me in every possible way. They have been my best friends, and they have taught me everything I know.

I hope your senior year is amazing, too. I guarantee it will be if you take all of the opportunities that are offered to you, and that you don't forget to laugh. Senior year can be stressful, but I finally realized halfway through the year to cherish it anyway. You don't get to be in high school forever.
